Commission 101

WHAT ARE COMMISSIONS?

From the beginning, Comic Cons started to celebrate comic books and comic book culture. Comic book fans gathered to meet creators, experts and each other. To this day, Artist Alley and our Creator Guests are at the heart of our convention. After all, if it weren’t for their creations and art, we wouldn’t love all the characters that we do today!

Commissions are a great way to take home a custom, one-of-a-kind piece of art from your favourite comic book creator or artist! You get to be a part of the creative process and let your imagination connect with the artist’s skills. What you come away with is a unique memento that will always remind you of your experience at Capital City Comic Con.

Types of Commissions

Each creator or artist has their own unique offerings. Once you and the artist have come up with an idea, they dive into the sketching, inking and colouring of your piece. It’s a lot of work! These are some of the most common kinds of commissions:

  • Bust Sketch: A sketch of a character that focuses on the head and shoulders.
  • Full Figure: You guessed it, a sketch of the characters full body!
  • Full Figure with Background: Pretty self explanatory, you get a full character set in the scene of a cool background.

Commissions Costs

Every artist will have a different fee for their time and talent. However, commissions can range anywhere from $50 – $500, so it’s important to know what to ask for and what to expect.

Commissions in pencil are some of the most affordable whereas if you want the artist to take it to the next level and ink/colour their work as well, that will take some more time and cost a bit more. If you have a budget in mind, share that with the artist and you might be able to come up with a great piece of art that you’ll have forever!
